Philo Dept Mourns the Passing of Her First Alumnus
This is to inform the university community that Mr. Salvador F. Bernal passed away lunch time yesterday (26 October 2011). Wake is at the Immaculate Concepcion, Cubao, starting today (27 October 2011) at nine. Funeral is still to be arranged. Please remember him in your prayers.
Mr. Bernal graduated from the Ateneo de Manila with a B.S. in Philosophy, cum laude, in 1966. He received the medal for philosophy and the Mulry Award for creative writing. He taught briefly at the college and founded the Ateneo Drama Group.
Mr. Bernal finished an MFA in Theatre Arts at Northwestern University in 1972. He returned to the Ateneo in 1973, as an instructor at the Communication Department. From 1975-1990 he was resident production designer of Ballet Philippines. Since 1994, he has been teaching with the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of the School of Humanities.
A highly acclaimed designer, with some 300 productions across different genres of theater to his credit, Mr. Bernal was proclaimed National Artist for Theatre Design by the Republic of the Philippines in 2003.*photo courtesy of CCP
